Bear's Gap

  • Bear's Gap

Just in case you thought all of Virginia's old-time music was in the Blue Ridge, check out this band from South Norfolk. The Rounders did mostly popular material: the flip side of this record is a hilarious "Honeysuckle Rose" with Earl trying hard to sing like Fats Waller. He was a very inventive fiddler, though, never playing the high part of this tune the same way twice.

Norman Phelps' Virginia Rounders: Earl Phelps, fiddle; Ken Card, tenor banjo; Willie Phelps, guitar; Norman Phelps, bass.
