    Irving Milford Mole was born on Long Island in 1898. He played in a series of hotel and show bands in New York in the twenties, meeting Red Nichols in 1925 in the band at Earl Carroll's Varieties. Among the earliest young white musicians to take a serious interest in jazz, they began a long collaboration of arranging and performing with small groups based on the New Orleans model, but incorporating their own ideas.
