House Carpenter

  • The House Carpenter

Clarence "Tom" Ashley (1895-1967) of Shouns, Tennessee, was a lifelong performer and showman, who played everything from traditional ballads to ragtime novelties. This song is an American version of "The Demon Lover" (Child 243); the full story, available in the Scottish versions, is that what appears to be the old boyfriend is really the Devil in disguise.

    Clarence Ashley, vocal, banjo.
