    Ellington, usually called "Duke" for his aristocratic bearing, was born in Washington DC in 1899, By 1929 he was playing at the famous CottonClub in Harlem -- where they wouldn't let him in the front door as a guest ~—and living in Harlem, where he remained until his death in 1974,
