Walk, Tom Wilson, Walk

  • Walk, Tom Wilson, Walk

This is what the Grand Ole Opry sounded like in its first few years. Like most of the cast, Uncle Dave (1870-1952), Sam (1894-1975), Kirk (1899-1983), and Mazy Todd were from middle Tennessee, not far from Nashville. They had been on the Opry for about two years when they went to New York for this recording session. Macon was a master of many banjo styles: the low part of "Rabbit" is fingerpicked, while the high part is played clawhammer style. "Tom Wilson",a banjo - guitar duet, is probably an old minstrel piece adapted by Uncle Dave to convey his often-expressed opinion of the Big Apple.

Uncle Dave Macon and his Fruit Jar Drinkers: Dave Macon, vocal, banjo; Sam McGee, guitar; Kirk McGee, Jasper "Mazy" Todd, fiddles.
