Some time around 1889 in St.Louis, Frankie Baker shot and killed Albert Johnson, inspiring one of the best-known and most widespread songs in the American tradition. This group from Kingsport, Tennessee ("Magic City" to local boosters) was auditioned in Norton, Virginia by the Brunswick talent scouts, and sent to New York a few weeks later for their only recording session.

Dykes’ Magic City Trio: G.H. "Hub" Mahaffey, vocal, guitar; John Dykes, fiddle; Myrtle Vermillion, autoharp.

New York NY 3/9/27 Vocalion 5143
