As a pianist, Jelly Roll Morton (1885-1941) was a kind of stylistic bridge between the New Orleans ragtime "professors” of the turn of the century and the modern jazz stylists of the 30's and 40's. His harmonies in particular seemed to combine inventive ideas well ahead of his time with his old "cutting contest" desire to confound the competition.

The brother act stayed together until about 1950, when Bill went out on his own, and Cliff retired to Louisville, dying there in 1983, Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton, piano.
