Arkansas jokes are currently in again, but also go back a long way: versions of this particular one have been found back to the 1830's. Virginians Harrell (1889-1942), originally from Wythe Co, and Rorer (1891-1936), born in Franklin Co, were among the leading musicians from the cotton-mill towns of the Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont in the 1920's. R.D. Hundley (1898-1991), about whom little is known, abandoned music in the 1930's, and was a park ranger in his later years, Stegall (1907-) also quit playing, and retired as Fieldale's Chief of Police in 1990.

Kelly Harrell, vocal: Posey Rorer, fiddle; Alfred Stegall, guitar; Ramey D. Hundley, banjo.
