    Gillam Bannom Grayson was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, in 1887. Nearly blind since infancy, he lived most of his life just over the state line in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, He met Henry Whitter (1892-1941) of Fries, Virginia at a fiddlers’ convention in Johnson City, and they began performing and recording together, a career cut short by Grayson's death in an automobile accident near Damascus, Virginia in the summer of 1930,
