    On October 10, 1896, Buford Overton was hanged in Harlan County -- the + last public execution in Kentucky -- for the robbery and murder of Gus and Julia Loeb, a pair of itinerant peddlers. Shepard, of nearby Jenkins KY, recorded one of the few surviving versions of the local song about the murder.
