Frank Shelton was born in Clay County Kentucky in 1902, By the twenties he had a barbershop in Corbin, and was a well-known musician and song collector, His old friend Ed Ward remembered that the restaurant across the street from the barbershop "had some kind of record player and would play a number from time to time which Frank was trying to learn, and every time this record came on Frank would rush out on the sidewalk with pencil and tablet and jot down a stanza or two."
