Before there was Aretha Franklin, even before there was Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe was out there breaking down the barriers between gospel song and popular performance. A phenomenal guitarist as well as a powerful singer, she was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, but lived most of her life in Chicago.
