Springdale Blues

  • Springdale Blues

One of the few Black 5-string banjoists to record, the indefatigable Gus Cannon sings, plays banjo, blows the jug, and probably would have done a little buck-and-wing at the same time if he had been on a medicine show stage. Though he lived in Memphis in poverty and obscurity for many years after the collapse of the record business in the Depression, he had composer credit on his songs; and the enormous success of his "Walk Right In, Sit Right Down" in the folk boom of the 60's catapulted him into a prosperous and secure old age.

Cannon's Jug Stompers: Gus Cannon, vocal, banjo, jug; Noah Lewis, harmonica; Ashley Thompson, guitar, 3
