  • Stone Rag

It just seems right to close the last Christmas tape of the millennium with a reminder of the good old days when there was real country music on the Grand Ole Opry. The Gully Jumpers, led by Paul Warmack (1890-1954), a Nashville auto mechanic, were a featured Opry act from their debut in 1927, well into the 50's, "Stone Rag", written by Oscar Stone of the Possum Hunters (heard on last year's tape), rapidly became a nationwide standard in the old-time fiddle repertoire, though it was Stone's friend Charlie Arrington, a farmer and Saturday-night fiddler from Joelton, Tennessee, who first recorded it. And with that, Merry Christmas and Happy 2000 to all.

Paul Warmack and his Gully Jumpers: Charlie Arrington, fiddle; Paul Warmack, mandolin; Roy Hardison, banjo; Burt Hutcherson, guitar.
