Sugar Hill

Among the few recorded performances of the renowned Ward family of Grayson Co VA are a couple of gems captured more or less by chance at the OKeh session in Winston-Salem. As he did his whole life, Fields (1911-87) made up his own unique words to sing. He always claimed to have done this simply as an aid in remembering the tunes, but this too may have been a bit of his poetry.

Crockett Ward and his Boys: Crockett Ward, fiddle; Fields Ward, vocal, guitar; Samp Ward, banjo; Curren Ward, autoharp.

    Winston-Salem NC 9/26/27 OKeh 45179
