Another of J.B. Long's discoveries, Gary Davis was born in Laurens, South Carolina in 1896, but moved to Durham, North Carolina at an early age. While not unwilling to do blues pieces under the right circumstances, he was mainly interested in religious songs and preaching. He moved to New York not long after his only recording session, eking out a living as a street preacher and singer for years. As the folk music boom sprang up in the 50's, he attracted the attention of a new audience, and by the time of his death in 1972, The Reverend had become guitar teacher and guru to a whole generation of young white musicians.

    Blind Gary Davis, vocal, guitar.
