Been To The East Been To The West

  • Been To The East, Been To The West

Actually, the Leake County Revelers weren't from Leake County, Mississippi, but from Sebastopol in neighboring Scott County. They were probably named by Jackson music store owner H.C, Speirs, who mainly scouted blues talent for the record companies, but who knew good old time music when he heard it, and got them their Columbia contract. Fiddler Will Gilmer (1897-1960) was the youngest member, Moseley having been born in 1885, Jones in 1889, and Wolverton in 1895, Huey Long, who also knew good old time music when he heard it, hired the Revelers to play at his campaign appearances, a practice much mocked by his opponents but greatly enjoyed by his supporters.

The Leake County Revelers: Will Gilmer, fiddle; Jim Wolverton, banjo; R.O. Moseley, mandolin; Dallas Jones, guitar, vocal.
